Where the Ocean Economy Is Hiring
A live index of ocean and blue-economy roles, read once a day straight from the employers' own job boards. Who is hiring — corporates, scaleups, startups, research institutes, foundations — what the work actually is, and how to find the part of it that fits you.

Most people who want to work on the ocean run into the same wall: they cannot see the jobs.
Not because there are none. Because they sit on a few hundred separate career pages, in an industry that has never agreed on what to call itself. A hydrographic surveyor, a fuel-transition engineer, a fisheries policy analyst and a marina operations manager are all doing ocean work, and none of them would find each other through a job search. There is no single word to type.
The index above is our attempt at the missing view. It reads the employers' own job boards once a day, sorts every posting onto the same map, and links straight back to the original. Below is what it currently shows about where the work actually is.
Who is hiring
The ocean economy is not one kind of employer, and the difference matters more than most job boards let on. A research institute and a Series A startup can be advertising the same skill set and offering entirely different lives.
Corporates
This is the bulk of it, by a wide margin, and it is where most people who move into the ocean economy will land. Maersk and TotalEnergies each carry several hundred open roles. DNV — the classification society — is consistently among the largest single employers in the index. Then the offshore and marine engineering houses: DEME and Boskalis in dredging and marine infrastructure, Fugro in survey and geodata, Damen in shipbuilding, ABB in marine electrification, Alfa Laval in shipboard systems, Equinor in offshore energy.
What you get here is scale, structure and a real budget for the thing you were hired to do. What you give up is proximity to the decision. These are also the employers most likely to hire someone with no maritime background at all — a data engineer at Fugro is doing data engineering.
Scaleups
The companies that have proven the technology and are now building the business around it. Ocean Infinity runs robotic survey fleets and is hiring hydrographic surveyors, including at graduate level. Saildrone builds uncrewed surface vehicles and needs everything from composite technicians to autonomy engineers. Sofar Ocean is hiring at the level of Principal Scientist, Underwater Acoustics — a role that did not exist as a job title a decade ago.
This is the band with the best ratio of interesting problem to actual resources, and the one most people overlook because the names are unfamiliar.
Startups
Small in number, outsized in what they are attempting. Fleetzero is electrifying cargo ships. Captura and Planetary Technologies are both removing carbon through the ocean, by different routes. Bedrock Ocean maps the seabed autonomously. Aquabyte brings computer vision to salmon farming.
Note what these roles look like: Fleetzero is hiring a Growth Manager, Maritime Electrification; Bedrock a Head of Survey Operations; Captura a Manufacturing & Supply Chain Manager. Commercial and operational people, not only engineers. Early-stage ocean companies need someone to sell the thing and someone to build it at volume, and those roles are usually easier to enter from outside the industry than the technical ones.
Research institutes and universities
The most internationally spread part of the index. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is the single largest research employer in it, and the range is wider than the word "research" suggests — WHOI is hiring marine electricians alongside scientists. Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, Aarhus University, the Australian National University, the University of Otago: postdocs in physical oceanography, research software engineers, PhD positions on shelf-sea dynamics.
If you have a doctorate this is the obvious door. If you have software skills it is a less obvious one that is wide open — modern ocean science is largely a data discipline, and institutes struggle to hire people who can build for it.
NGOs, foundations and public bodies
Small teams, long horizons, and roles that are genuinely hard to fill. The Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation hires for its Arctic Ocean Initiative. The Bezos Earth Fund is staffing operations and systems. Global Fishing Watch — which made industrial fishing visible from space — has hired at chief-officer level. The Helmholtz Association carries full professorships in marine benthic ecology.
Funding here is philanthropic or public rather than commercial, which changes the rhythm: less pressure to ship, more to be right.
What the work actually is
Sort the index by role and the shape is not what the word "maritime" suggests.
Engineering is the largest group by some distance — mechanical, electrical, software, robotics. Operations and Commercial & Sales come next, roughly level with each other: project managers, logistics coordinators, business developers. Then Data & ML, and Science & Research at a similar size. HSEQ — health, safety, environment, quality — is a substantial and permanently under-filled category. Smaller but real: Policy & Programme, Finance, Product, Communications, Skilled Trades.
The practical reading: most of these roles are ordinary professional jobs applied to an unusual domain. You are far more likely to be hired for the skill you already have than for maritime knowledge you do not. The domain is learnable on the job; the skill mostly is not.

What the work is for
Every posting also carries what it contributes to, and the distribution says something about where the money and urgency currently sit.
Decarbonisation dominates: shipping fuels, port electrification, offshore wind, efficiency. Shipping alone accounts for around three percent of global emissions and has a hard 2050 target, and the hiring reflects it.
Ocean knowledge and data is the second cluster — survey, monitoring, modelling, remote sensing. You cannot manage what you cannot measure, and most of the ocean is still unmeasured.
Ocean governance and coastal resilience follow: marine protected areas, fisheries management, spatial planning, flood and storm-surge protection. Then the smaller and newer fields — biodiversity and conservation, ocean carbon removal, ocean health and pollution, food security.
The last four are where the ratio of open problems to available people is most lopsided. Ocean carbon removal in particular barely existed as an employer five years ago.
The sectors
Fourteen of them, following the EU Blue Economy definitions with our own additions where the standard classifications go quiet — leisure marine, maritime services, ocean climate and ocean governance have no clean home in the official statistics, which is part of why this labour market is so hard to see from outside.
By volume the index is currently led by offshore and marine energy, ports and maritime logistics and commercial shipping, followed by maritime services — classification, marine law, insurance, ship finance — and ocean observation, survey and marine robotics. Shipbuilding and marine engineering, ocean governance, ocean climate, blue food and leisure marine are smaller in the index but not smaller in opportunity: fewer postings across fewer employers usually means less competition per role.
